DESCRIPTION
This 2 New Pence coin from the 1971 to 1981 series is a wonderful piece of British decimal history, struck in solid bronze rather than the later copper plated steel, giving it a satisfying weight and a warm reddish brown tone that ages beautifully. The reverse features the crowned portcullis with chains, a proud symbol of the British Parliament, while the obverse showcases a classic youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. While regular circulation strikes are fairly common, certain varieties are genuinely rare, particularly the 1981 New Pence error coin where the old reverse design was used after the inscription had officially changed to Two Pence. These error coins are highly sought after by collectors. Additionally, high grade uncirculated examples from the early 1970s are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making any well preserved specimen a smart addition to a collection.
